TEACHING

Volunteer Abroad and Help to Educate PUPILS of All Ages.

Teaching as an international volunteer with Siym International can be a rewarding way to interact with students of all ages and backgrounds who are eager to learn. In the educational centers where volunteers work—schools, community centers, and other organizations—services are provided to local people at no- or low-cost but the demand for education is often greater than the supply of teachers and resources are scarce.

Support local teachers working with pupils who have special needs so they can get more individualized attention. Volunteer with at-risk youth who see you as a positive role model. Or, help students master the English skills that open doors to better career opportunities.

Teaching Children Energize and Educate Youth through Teaching Abroad

Teaching children helps create a stimulating learning environment for children from low-income communities. New ideas and energy excite the children and provide much needed encouragement for the teachers and parents. The schools where we work often have very limited resources and can benefit from creative ways to keep children and teenagers engaged and dedicated to learning. Volunteers from other cultures show the value of education to children who may see work as more important than school.

Destiny Garden School opened in April 2009 and Jackie, who lives in Australia, joined the School project in May for 6 months. Jacky found it exciting being involved in the project from the beginning and her voluntary work varied from teaching Masikah, the school administrator, some basic bookkeeping, to helping Jacob set up safe and comfortable accommodation for volunteers. Amongst other things, Jacky has helped the school get desks, chairs and blackboards for the classrooms and school uniforms for the children.

SHARE YOUR IDEAS WITH CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD

Your ideas, energy, and presence are exciting for students and invigorating for teachers and parents. Children are full of curiosity about the world and they enjoy learning about life through new international role models. Your presence and support also means that students can benefit from more individual attention and a positive role model.

You can serve as a teacher's aide in subjects such as science, music, sports, and drama. Or, you may be teaching educational games, planning arts & crafts, or working alongside local teachers to create new developmentally and culturally appropriate activities for the children. Also, as an English speaker, you will always be informally teaching English.

HEALTHCARE

Volunteer Abroad and Support Organizations in Healthcare

Siym International has special opportunities for volunteers to work side-by-side with local people in healthcare. With small health clinics and understaffed hospitals serving low-income communities, volunteers support the over-worked staff, adding to their efficiency and allowing more people in need to be served. Volunteers provide moral support and reduce anxiety for patients and/or residents in communities where many people still view doctor’s visits as a last resort.

Our healthcare placements offer an exceptional learning opportunity, in addition to a gratifying volunteer experience. For those who aspire to a career in health-related fields, these placements offer an international learning ground where you can not only view healthcare in practice, but healthcare as practiced by professionals in a different country. For anyone interested in social services, observing the administration of health services in other parts of the world is invaluable.

Kathy, a UK nurse, visited the school in May 2009 on several occasions whilst she was doing voluntary work at the local hospital. Kathy is raising funds for both the hospital and the school by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in October 2009. After her climb, she will be returning to Mombasa and to Destiny Garden School to do further voluntary work.

Kathy says - " Even during my short time in Mombasa, the school progressed every time I visited, from desks and chairs bought to school uniforms being issued. The children were all very polite, and really enjoyed my visits. I would recommend visiting Destiny Garden School and I am going to continue to raise funds for them. I will certaily be visiting them again."

THE ONGOING EFFECT OF VOLUNTEERING OVERSEAS IN HEALTHCARE

The effects of volunteering abroad in healthcare are plain to see. Medical care is a basic human right, and making it accessible for all is essential. The organizations that we work with are striving to fulfill that need, and can always benefit from an extra pair of hands. SIYM International continuously provides volunteers for support and offers the opportunity for valuable cultural exchange at the same time.

Whether assisting with the daily workload of local health professionals, being a supporter of people with HIV/AIDS who have been shunned by their community, or providing basic sex education and disease prevention to community youth, you can make a difference.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

SIYM International works with many underserved communities across the worlds that are trying to develop and progress with the ever-changing global, and local economy. These communities may lack the resources—social, educational, or other—to be fully proactive on the daily challenges they face. International volunteers can help to empower both local community organizations and individuals with the tools they need to be self-sustainable, successful, and knowledgeable in their future endeavors.

Whether working with at-risk teens, young adults looking to join the workforce, or women striving to earn income for their families, you can help by sharing your time, energy, and experience.

THE ONGOING EFFECT OF VOLUNTEERS’ EFFORTS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Community development does not happen overnight, or in a few weeks—it’s something that progresses slowly over time and never has an end point. SI provides a steady stream of volunteers to these communities to fulfill their immediate needs year after year, and for that reason, you will be able to make a sustainable, ongoing effect on a community’s development efforts, even though you may only spend a short time in-country.

Judy spent 3 weeks in September 2009 at destiny Garden School to help buy sports equipment from funds raised by her friends in the UK and to also help set up their website and get a sponsorship program in place. Judy photographed all the children individually and, with the help of the School Administrator, Masikah who is pictured here, wrote up their profiles. The information will prgressivly be included on this website - see 'Children'.

Judy says - "It's all been a marvellous experience, very uplifting when you see the joy it brings to these very poor children's lives. I fully support Jacob's vision of getting these children out of the poverty trap through education."
